Shipping-clerk.jpg

Passing through a dimly lit alley on the way to investigate some activity on the other side of the docks, you nearly run into a shipping clerk--you can tell because of the clipboard and package she's carrying--whose dark clothes made her blend into the background. As surprised as you are, she's even more startled when you approach, and a shifty look in her eyes tells you she's up to no good.

When you inquire what she's up to, she goes on at great length in a whining, pleading tone. "I wasn't even supposed to be here today. But the normal guy couldn't make it. And then someone put gum in the locks. Bunch of savages in this town. Then some guys on the east end closed a warehouse to play hockey. I'm just trying to maintain some managerial control here."

"What about that box?" you ask.

"This thing? It, ah, uh ... someone ... found it ... someplace where it wasn't supposed to be. And now I'm, uh, trying to figure out ... uh ... where it goes."

You don't buy it for a second. "Look, I think maybe I should take the box off your hands. Why don't you give it over and I'll just let you off with a warning?"

The woman flinches. "I told you, I just found it. I've got to figure out where it goes." She looks around, like maybe someone else might be in the dark alley with the two of you, and then reaches into a pocket. She pulls out a handful of chips and thrusts them at you. "Can't we just call it square?" she asks.

"Sorry ma'am, but I can't allow you to keep that," you say, taking the box from her. The clerk resists, but only feebly. "I knew I shouldn't have agreed to come in today," she sighs.

You walk away with the box, and once you're out of sight you break it open to see what's inside. Turns out there's a whole lot of packing material and a single strange bottle. You throw the rest away and keep the bottle.

You frown disgustedly at the proffered bribe, trying to decide what to do. Eventually you say, "Look, I wouldn't normally do this, but I've got bigger fish to fry right now. I'm not saying bribery is okay, but I'm going to assume that this financial penalty will be a costly lesson for you, and that from now on you'll behave responsibly. Do I have your word on that?"

The clerk nods vigorously. "Oh, absolutely. You bet."

Still not convinced, you say, "I'll be watching you." She pales, and you nod to yourself. Good. Honesty through paranoia. Works every time. You pocket the money and begin to walk away. When you're nearly out of hearing range, you can hear her whine, "But I wasn't even supposed to be here today ..."

Demand Information
You demand more information. You can't get no satisfaction, but apparently you can get that information. The clerk gives you a bunch of details about shipping routes, schedules, and other details about the docks. None of it is really all that useful as a lead, but you know a lot more about how things work.

You gain 80-100 experience.
