A Dilemma of the Horns
A screech of tires and a series of loud bangs pulls you out of the back alleys and to a major intersection, where you see that a spill on the road has apparently caused a multi-car accident. Traffic is beginning to back up, and horns are blaring as unhappy drivers try to navigate the accident scene. None of the drivers appear to be seriously hurt, though, as they have all gotten out of there cars and are milling around, making the traffic issues that much worse. There are sirens in the distance, so police help ought to be on the way in a few minutes, but some traffic direction now could prevent a giant traffic jam later.

Then your jaw drops as you realize that you know one of the men in the crowd. His name is Richard Horn, and this is the man who killed your uncle and stole his car. Wait, did I say "killed"? I meant "shoved." And it wasn't so much "stole his car" as Richard "snatched 50 chips from out of his hand in a casino and ran away." Anyway, even though your uncle is alive and in good health, you really hate that Richard Horn guy, and you think someone should teach him a lesson. But he's walking swiftly away from the accident.
*Avenge your uncle's murderer. Er, robber.
*Try to prevent major gridlock
*Try to do both at once
what do you do?
Results
With Great Power Comes Great Revenge

You figure the traffic jam is inevitable whatever you do, but avenging your uncle is something you can only do once, so you dash off after Richard Horn. Something must have alerted him, because he starts to speed up and then breaks into a full run as you get close. But a mere mortal is no match for your heroic speed, and you catch him easily.

Of course he doesn't recognize you in costume, so you have to take several minutes just to explain why you've chased him down. And naturally, he's terrified the entire time, because he doesn't understand why someone in your strange outfit is after him. Eventually he catches on, though.

"Chips? You want chips? Here!" He reaches into his pocket and grabs a handful. "This should make up for whatever family members feel cheated. Just leave me alone!" You let him run off and pocket the chips, figuring the debt is balanced. You'll give the chips to your uncle next time you see him, which at this pace might be in a decade or two.

.
----
With Great Horespower Comes Great Responsibility

You survey the situation and decide that your personal vengeance isn't nearly as important as serving the public trust by sorting out the traffic jam. You let Richard Horn skulk off into the distance while you focus on getting hundreds of commuters from point A to point B in a reasonable time frame. It takes a few minutes to get things cleared up properly (picking up cars, setting them down on the curb, etc.) but when you're done there's a spare hubcap that doesn't belong to any cars you can identify, so you get to take it home with you. Sweet!

You got an item: dented hubcap
----
An Electron You Are Not

You practically dive after Richard Horn, while beginning to shout increasingly loud instructions to the people standing in the intersection. Unfortunately, your noise makes Richard turn around, and he seems to realize that you're tailing him. Meanwhile, nobody in the accident site can hear you over the sound of the car alarms and horns that are still blasting into the air.

Pretty soon Richard is gone, and traffic has backed up for more than a block in every direction, meaning your efforts are wasted. You should really learn it's just not possible to take care of two major issues at once.
Back to Out in the Desert

You climb a dusty and weed-cluttered walking trail until you reach the crest of a desolate and wind-swept butte. A short, deeply bronzed man of apparently Native American descent is sitting beside a small campfire. He nods as you approach but otherwise sits motionless. You approach the fire and take a seat across from him.

On your first visit

After you sit quietly for a few moments, the man says, "Call me Don Carlos. You are nearing readiness for the wisdom of the desert. Once you are ready, I can teach you more about this world if you wish. First, you must understand that this world is not always what it seems. The creatures in the place you call the 'Fiendish Pit' are more illusion than real. You think you fight their phsyical forms, but you truly fight within your mind. Spend time with them and bring me back what you believe to be 45 of their claws and 15 of their skulls, and I will demonstrate the illusion. After you have learned that lesson, if you are experienced enough, I will teach you more."

Upon gaining the claws and skulls

You produce the claws and skulls, and the old man says, "You have brought me enough claws and skulls from the 'Fiendish Pit.' Are you ready for your training?"

(Hand over the Claws and Skulls)

You hand over 45 infernal claws and 15 fiendish skulls. Don Carlos takes them all and lays them out on a blanket. He sits cross-legged in front of the blanket, and gestures for you to do the same. Then he begins to hum gutturally while slowly circling one hand, palm down, over the infernal remains. As you watch the skulls and claws begin to shimmer a little. Then, for one brief moment, you see something else that doesn't look like skulls or claws at all. They look more like, well, worms of some kind. Dead worms. Then the worms crumble to dust and a light breeze blows them away.

"Did you see?" Don Carlos asks.

You nod. "I ... I think so."

"Good. That is the beginning of the truth. Think on that, and when you are stronger I will show you more."

You have enough experience to go up to level YY.
Training will cost ZZZZ chips.

If you have not yet reached enough experience to gain a level:
"You are currently level X.
You and the mystic stay up all night, sitting around a campfire and talking about the nature of reality. Late in the night you finally drift off to sleep. When you wake, the mystic is gone, but your watch says that almost no time has passed since you sat down. Weird. You do feel smarter, though.

or

Don Carlos has you sit and slowly scan the desert surroundings through slitted eyes, as an exercise in "recharging your spirit," as he called it. When you have completed your task, you feel more spirited than ever before. It felt like the process took hours, but your watch says only minutes have passed.
or

Don Carlos hands you a pipe full of some mysterious herbs, which the two of you share. Then you go for a walk in the darkness, exploring the strange shadowy world. When you return to camp, your watch says that almost no time has passed but you feel as if an age has passed.
Various items can be created by welding parts together on your workbench. In addition to the components listed below, the hero also needs a welding torch and some solder, both available from Lieutenant A.E.P. Bazooko's Military Surplus. One solder is used if the welding has a valid product.
Computers & Software
There are two computers that can be constructed depending on the components available and whether your hero has Supercomputer Skills. These are assembled and used in the Computer Lab. Even super heroes need help once in a while, so be sure to pick up a copy of the Electronic computer instructions or the Positronic computer instructions, both available from Aaron's All-Night Electronics.

Software
What good is a computer without software? For now that means Vlad's Decryptonomicon software, available at Aaron's All-Night Electronics, and handy for decrypting the Mangled data plate into:
*Physiology scan code
*Signal processing code
*Statistical analysis code

These codes may then be combined to form software, which (mostly) have continuing effects:
concerning & or + in titles
I goofed up while trying to fix the minor problem with "Journals & Quests" in the Game Manual area, and created Journal & Quests and Journal+Quests before I settled on a workable page title. Those two pages should be deleted, but I can't place the "delete" template on them because they're inaccessible once saved. They can be found by a search, and appear in Category lists, but if you try to navigate to them you get Journal instead. Big & tall shoreman has the same problem, but I didn't make it; I'll make Big and tall shoreman as a replacement. Anyway, "&" and "+" are apparently evil in titles; must be some difference from this wiki's software compared to Wikipedia. --Tarwix 13:32, 28 February 2008 (MST)

Talisman Transmogrifier
Wanting to try out one of the other classes? Then you've come to the right place. Located in the talismans nook of your Hideout, the transmogrifier is a device that will allow you to make the switch.

Unfortunately, this comes at a great cost. Your level is reset to one, and you lose all of your current experience, stats, and powers. However, you get to keep all your chips and items, minus the talisman of your old class, which you transmogrified into a shiny new one. Any quests you completed prior to your transformation will still be recorded in your journal, and you won't have to (or be able to) repeat them.

In order to use the transmogrifier, you must first equip the basic talisman of your current class (Ember in a Bottle, Lug-Nut Keychain, Shark's Tooth Necklace, or Intellectual Headband.) You will then have the option to transmogrify. If you're sure you're ready to make the leap, click the button and proceed to select your new class.

Description in Hideout
This is an insidious little device that you put together one evening when you'd had too much caffeine and couldn't think of anything else to do. From the outside it looks a bit like a cardboard box with a few wires and knobs coming out of it, and one really large "Transmogrify" button.

To be honest, the transmogrifier kind of scares you. Your notes suggest that anything put inside the box will be bombarded with some kind of horrible ray unknown to most scientists. You've tested it on a few mundane objects, and they've basically disintegrated. In theory if you put some sort of super-powerful object inside, such as, say, a talisman it might survive the ordeal but come out drastically altered. Unfortunately there's also no telling what might happen to the person who was fundamentally tied to the talisman at the time. There's a very good chance that you could lose most or even all of your powers and end up starting over from scratch -- barely more powerful than the average mortal.

On the other hand, change is fun, and it might let you see things from a different perspective.

Pop Culture Reference
The concept of a "transmogrifier" was first used in the Calvin and Hobbes comic strip, although several other works have used the term since. In the comic, the transmogrifier is merely an upside-down cardboard box. With the power of his boyish imagination, Calvin is able to use the "machine" to change himself into various other forms, such as a tiger and elephant.

In this game he stars ... the shining sparks that dazzle us ... heavenly bodies ... you know, astronomical objects--are used as investment tools. Buy shares of your favorite stars and the galaxies they sit in. Prices soar with stellar formation and plummet with a nova that everyone can see.

Invest in the stars on Orion's belt (there's no galaxy there, you know). Short sell a pulsar in M31. Make a fortune on the quasar futures market, or risk astronomical sums speculating on dark matter or the debut of the cosmic background radiation.
Recipes Standardization
The assembly recipe block BongBob used on the filter page is pretty nice. I've tried it with the Astral Stock Exchange software put the code in my user page. Let's use it? --Livia 16:52, 22 February 2008 (MST)
*Or even better, would it be possible to make a template for them? --Livia 16:56, 22 February 2008 (MST)
**Also, can we suppress the content box for pages with more than 4 sections? It's often unnecessary. --Livia 17:33, 22 February 2008 (MST)
Clan/League Directory/Pages
I think that a directory similar to the Coldfront wiki will suffice. As time passes, TH will have it's own history with leagues, and if the history is worthy of mention, it will get mention/approval. Agree/Disagree? --MagiNinjA 01:02, 3 January 2008 (MST)
Drop Location / How To Obtain standardization
I propose 'Drop Location' be changed to 'How To Obtain. This'll make pages more standardized, and allow us to make templates and stuff.
**Possible second requirement

Back to Quests.

1.The first step in initiating this quest is to gain the ability to fly. You can do this by either building yourself a jetpack or by heading to Quincy's Airship Emporium.

2.Next, head to the Outskirts of Area 54, and keep patrolling until you come across the Just Deserts adventure.

3.Choose the third option - See how far you can toss the hubcap. You will get the Strange as Fiction adventure. The resulting text will tell you to pay Susan Novak a visit.
The resulting text is as follows:
Frustrated, you wing the hubcap into the crater and watch as it sails through the air, turns on its side, and plummets to the ground with an odd, hollow metallic clonk. Strange. Very strange.

You climb down into the crater to investigate. Brushing away several inches of sand and gravel where the hubcap landed, you're surprised to see metal. It looks like a big horizontal sheet, slightly warped, pitted and corroded by time, but still very solid. What's it doing out here in the desert? You stomp on the metal sheet and hear an echoey thump, as if the ground underneath is hollow. Gradually you clear away more sand, and the metal keeps going. Whatever it is, it's fairly big, like a bunker. Or a septic tank. But why out here?

Eventually you find what looks like a door, slightly bent out of alignment with the metal surrounding it. It takes all your strength to coerce the skewed and rusted hinges to move, but you get the door open. Pulling out a flashlight (every hero always comes prepared, right?) you peer into the gloom.

Whatever it is, it's not a septic tank. It looks like a large room turned on its side, halfway filled with sand and gravel, the bottom strewn with metal shrapnel. Stalactites drip down from the ceiling in places, and stalagmites rise up from the floor. Whatever this stuff is, it's been here for a long time. It doesn't look human, either. Banks of twisted machinery along the walls somewhat resemble recognizable hardware, but the angles are wrong, the buttons are too big, the aesthetic is just ... different. You think about exploring further but quickly decide that jumping into the dim recesses of some ancient machinery isn't the smartest thing to do. You'd rather have a scientist's opinion about this anyway. Maybe you ought to talk to Susan Novak and see what she thinks about this?
The following text will also appear in your Journal:

You've found something strange out in the desert. You ought to talk to your friend Susan Novak--the only real scientist you know--about what it might be.

4.Visit Novak downtown, at University Heights. This will yield the following text:

'You stop in and tell Susan about the mysterious mechanical ruin you found in the desert. She listens thoughtfully, first seeming skeptical but then growing more interested as you fill in the details. When you're done, Susan has you go over everything a couple of times, to make sure she understands. Finally you ask, "So, what do you think?"

Susan pauses to collect her thoughts. "As always, I'm skeptical until I have more data, but this sounds intriguing. There are any number of possible explanations, and in the limited light it makes your observations all the more suspect, but I'll definitely send out a team tomorrow to investigate. I don't know if I mentioned, but I'm not only faculty here at the university, I'm also a founding member of an 'abnormal occurrences' research team."

"You mean something like the S.U.I.T. researchers?"

Susan laughs. "No, those guys are a bunch of quacks. We like to collect stories of all sorts of unusual occurrences--paranormal investigation, U.F.O.s, you name it. We're open-minded skeptics, so we don't have an agenda to prove people wrong, just apply good science. Most of it still involves telling crazy pepole they're delusional, but it's an interesting hobby."

Susan suggests you check back in tomorrow evening and she'd let you know what she's found.'

This also results in the following text appearing in your Journal:

You've found something strange out in the desert and you've told Susan about it. She said she'll investigate tomorrow, so you'll have to check back with her then to see what she thinks.

5.Visit Novak again, after rollover. This begets you the following message:

"[Player]! Come in. I've got exciting news! That crash site you found out in the desert, it's amazing! Whatever it is, it's not of human origin, you're right about that. It was mechanical, but it's not like any kind of machinery I've ever seen, and what little bit of language could be found is no earthly language. Plus it's got to be hundreds or thousands of years old--again, too old for humans."

"Did you find anything significant?" you ask.

"Other than the discovery of non-human life out in the universe? It's too early to say for sure. There's one thing that's particularly interesting, and I'll get to that in a moment. Most of what's in there was badly damaged--it looks like whatever it was crash landed and barely survived complete destruction, and time has not been kind to it since. There's no sign of life, either, which is strange. Either it was an unmanned ship, or the beings inside it escaped before the crash."

Susan continues, "There's all kinds of things we can learn from this technology, given the time to piece it together again. But there's one thing we got out of there, though, that's particularly intriguing. We found a large crate that was damaged on the surface, but the inner contents were exceptionally well padded. Layer after layer of strange materials: foams and harnesses and whatnot. Inside were two large devices, shaped like hollow triangles. We have no idea what they're for, but at least on the surface they appear to be in perfect physical condition. They're our best hope for learning something about this technology. We've brought them back to the lab for investigation. Check back in tomorrow and I'll tell you what we've found."

Susan's confirmed that the ruins are non-human in origin. That alone is the scientific breakthrough of the millennium, but she's very excited about a couple of mechanical triangles that seem to be among the few things in good condition. Check back in with her tomorrow for more details.

6. Visit Novak again, after rollover. She has this to say:

"We've got amazing news!" Susan says before you can even say hi. For someone who likes to talk about being calm and rational, she looks like she's about to explode. "Those triangles? They're portals! To each other. You go in one, and you come out the other."

"Wait," you say, "like a tunnel or something?"

"No, like teleporting. Instantaneous matter transmission. You know, 'Beam me up, Scotty.' Or something right out of Stargate. The triangles aren't connected, and it doesn't matter how far apart they are. Here, watch."

Susan turns on a TV in her office and starts playing a DVD. "This is a recording from earlier, when we still had both of them in the lab." The scene is a large garage or warehouse. Two large metal triangles are set up 30 feet apart. The space inside the triangle shimmers oddly. As you watch, a woman approaches one of the triangles, steps inside, and steps outside of the other one. "Wow ..." is all you can think to say.

"Exactly. We've driven one out to the edge of the city, and the results are the same. Instantaneous travel."

"What are you going to do with them?"

"Oh, that's obvious. We send it to space. There's all kinds of potential uses, but the greatest energy challenge we face is getting materials into orbit. If we can essentially get up there for free, it opens up space travel in a way nobody has ever imagined. It's hard not to sound over dramatic, but this could be the most valuable discovery in history." Susan pauses, and grows more serious. "We have to hurry, though. The other implication of this discovery is it's clear there's other life out there. Not only that, but they have the means to reach Earth, because they've already done so. And instantaneous transportation changes everything--they could be here any day. So we've got to move fast. We're trying to get funding for an emergency space launch. We've got to get one of these portals up there as soon as possible, and start building a space station. The problem is, we're also trying to keep somewhat quiet about it. If the government finds out about it, they're likely to shut these things up in a basement somewhere for perpetual study. My colleagues and I believe we have to act quickly, so we're trying to track down private funding for the expedition. We think once we can get the portal into space and get a significant station built, the momentum will carry the project forward. We need millions, though, so if you happen to know any potendial [sic - soleta] donors, please come back and let me know."

The following text appears in your journal:

You've seen the strange teleporting triangles, and Susan has convinced you that getting them up into space quickly is a good idea. Too bad she needs a lot of funding to make that happen.

Head by Susan's again at this point, and you get:

Susan is working on a spreadsheet when you stop by her office. "Oh, hi, [Player], I'm just working on the project budget. We've gotten a little private funding, but it's tough trying to ask about this and also keep it quiet. Have you had any luck finding any potential donors? No?" The scientist eyes your expensive fighting gear, and takes a deep breath before starting slowly. "I really hate to even ask, but I and most of the others on my team are pouring a lot of our personal money into this because it's so important. Do you have any funds to spare? We can't promise that there will be any rewards in return, other than for the good of humanity, which is something you already deal with on a regular basis. We'll give you free access to the space station, of course, but we would have done that anyway."

How much are you willing to donate?

If you head to Susan's after that:

I know you've already donated some, but do you have any additional funds to spare? We're making some progress, but we still need a lot more to get there. Every day we go without action, there's a chance the news will leak to the public and we'll be stopped before we can even get started."

You have donated X chips to the cause thus far.
