Tarwix: links

Your first view when you step through the portal and into the space station is stunning. Where before there had been a handful of robots, or a small mass of them, now there is a swarm. They fill the air, the water, and the ground around the water. Scores of them are fighting each other, and smoking slag piles attest to scores more that have fallen by the wayside. You're suprised to notice that there are still a number of people up here, all of them wearing blue jeans, white shirts, and yellow hard hats. Must be the construction crew trying to patch the worst of the damage and keep the station from disintegrating around the robots.

You brace yourself for yet another impossible fight. Some of these robots seem, if anything, even bigger than the last wave, which nearly finished you off. You're not sure how much more of this you can take. None of the robots really seem to care about you though, and you walk all the way to the central pond without being disturbed. An empty canoe drifts by, and you wonder how it got there. Then, to your amazement, the two paddles start moving, apparently on their own. "Hey!" you shout, even though you're not sure why, "there's nobody driving that canoe!"

Well, maybe it's a robot, you think to yourself under further consideration. You've seen motorized boats, why not a motorized canoe?

Even with this in your mind, you're still a little surprised when a hatch opens in the side of the canoe and a barrage of missiles fly out, demolishing some sort of nearby flying craft. The canoe then spins and starts paddling in the other direction. What really throws you off your stride is it seems to be humming to itself. Before you can stop yourself, you find yourself shouting again, "Hey, there's nobody driving that canoe!"

Oh, wait, robots. Yeah. Robots.

About that time one of the men in yellow hard hats approaches you. He starts to ask a question but then stops and gawks over your shoulder. "Hey!" he shouts, "there's nobody-"

"Yeah," you say, "I know."

Now that the "fundraising drive" for the space station is apparently over, the paragraph after "What are you going to do with them?" now reads:

"Oh, that's obvious. We send it to space. There's all kinds of potential uses, but the greatest energy challenge we face is getting materials into orbit. If we can essentially get up there for free, it opens up space travel in a way nobody has ever imagined. It's hard not to sound over dramatic, but this could be the most valuable discovery in history." Susan pauses, and grows more serious. "We have to hurry, though. The other implication of this discovery is it's clear there's other life out there. Not only that, but they have the means to reach Earth, because they've already done so. And instantaneous transportation changes everything--they could be here any day. So we've got to move fast. We've got to get one of these portals into space as soon as possible, and start building a space station. We've procured funding for a space launch, and we're scrambling to get it ready. Construction on a space station should start tomorrow--stop by and I'll make arrangements so you can go up there and visit if you're interested."
day 4 of the robot invasion, Susan says:
"The robots are back! It's a little different this time. There are more of them, many more. But there seems to be a different set, with greater variety. Still, they're making a complete mess of the space station."

You catch Alpha Prime and OmegaTron locked in a "duel to the death" for something like the fiftieth time. Because they're completely oblivious to anything else but each other, it's an easy task to sneak up behind the two behemoth robots and knock them flat on their respective afterburners when they're not looking.

You say, "Look, this is silly. This is our space station, our stream. It doesn't belong to either of you and no matter how much you fight over it, frankly, you can't have it, unless-" Both robots start to object, but you cut them off. "Unless! You agree to my simple terms. Do you want to hear the terms?" They bicker for a bit, but eventually agree to listen. You explain that there's plenty of room for both sides, and outline a means of sharing the waterways in the space station, where the warring robots can take turns using the water while earning their rent rebuilding the station and teaching their technology to humans.

Shortly you have both sides nodding in agreement, and they're practically ready to sign a peace treaty, when a glowing pinhole of light appears directly above the middle of the pond. The light grows quickly in size and brightness, and then a swarm of aquatic creatures come pouring out of it and splash into the water. One of the creatures swims across the pond and surfaces mere meters from where you stand with the two robot leaders.

The creature that comes out of the water looks something like a spherical alligator, if such a thing is possible. It also appears to be robotic. "I am Pentacron, leader of the Aquassons! I hereby claim this water in the name of the Aquassons! Guilty!" it shouts.
You try to be a voice of reason, but you can feel the truce slipping away. "Look, why don't we all talk about this for a bit. I'm sure we can make a three-way arrangement and-"

A scream from OmegaTron cuts you off. "Never! Don't be a fool! There's no negotiating with them. Ford-bots, retreeeeeeeeeeat and regroup!" He launches himself into the air and turns into some sort of flying bridge.

You turn to Alpha Prime, pleading for him to be reasonable, but he shakes his head. "I'm sorry, but that's not how I row. Paddlebots! Transmute and row out!" He turns back into a cruise liner and splashes across the pond at top speed, where his allies gather to his side. Not surprisingly Pentacron also shouts for his minions to come to his location, and a third group of robots forms. Within a matter of minutes all three groups are building fortifications, and small spying and raiding parties are zipping back and forth between each group. Fairly soon a three-fronted battle has begun, with Aquassons fighting Paddlebots, Paddlebots fighting Ford-bots, and Ford-bots fighting Aquassons.

You try to imagine how this could possibly have gone any worse, but nothing comes to mind.

Some sort of aircraft zips out of the sky towards you. In the blink of an eye it twirls and turns in upon itself, and a robot is standing in the place where the aircraft was. "I am ScarStream. I understand you have met Omegatron, our 'leader.'" You can almost hear the quotes around the word. "One day, Omegatron, I will rule, and then you will see what the Fordbots can be."
"Huh?"

"Did I say that out loud? Nevermind. Here's the projection cube that OmegaTron--rackin', frackin', grumble grumble--ordered that I give to you."

The robot drops the cube and leaps into the air. Within seconds he's gone. What a weirdo, you think. But now for the cube. It's a milky translucent material, with a single black button on the top, labeled "PUSH."

You push the button. Light shines from the cube, and what looks like a 3-D movie is projected into the air in front of you. A deep, gravelly voice begins to narrate.

"An ancient world. Full of streams. Two types of robots, living peacefully side by side for millennia. Paddlebots and Ford-bots. Paddlebots row across and down the river, staying mostly out of the water. Ford-bots wade right through, getting plenty wet. Still, for millennia this difference means nothing, and peace rules the land.

"Then, on a day lost in the mists of time, a Fordicon called a Paddlebot a hydrophobic fraidy-bot. Or maybe a Paddlecon called a Wade-bot a 'moss-legged dampwalker.' Nobody can agree how it really started. But everyone agrees that the two factions have been at odds ever since.

"Name-calling escalated to newspaper editorial writing, fanning the flames of intolerance. There were arguments. Then protests. Then peace talks, which seemed promising for a while before a ranking member of the Ford-bots called the leader of the Paddlebots a 'rusty bucket of floating bolts' and the talks broke down. Then war. Then peace talks again for a few millennia. Then more war. Vicious, unending, civil war. Paddler against wader, robot against robot, brother against brother.

"Now their world lies ravaged, blasted. The many streams, from the mightiest of rivers to the daintiest of rills, lie dusty and dry. No bots paddle the waters anymore, no bots wade the barren streams.

"Thousands of years ago the Paddlebots launched a lifeboat of sorts into the emptiness of space, in search of a watery world where they could paddle again in peace. Their flight brought them here, to Earth, a watery paradise, a paddler's dream. But something went wrong during the landing (some whisper it was Fordicon sabotage, some believe it was utter incompetence) and the ship crash-landed in a cataclysmic collision, killing every bot inside and nearly demolishing the entirety of the ship.

Re-activating the portals, even after all this time, called both the Row-bots and the Wade-bots to this place, and now they both vie for control of the first stream either bot has seen for millennia."

"The time has come to talk of many things."

"What are you?"

We are Paddlebots, also known as Row-bots, because we row upon the waters. We're from Aquatron, a planet far from Earth."

"Another planet? That's awesome! I mean obvious! The interstellar gates kind of tipped us off, you know."

"Those who fight us are called Fordicons. We must stop them before they destroy your world."

"Yeah, I kind of noticed. The fact that you're not shooting at me is promising, though. Who are you, anyway?"

"I am Alpha Prime, leader of the Paddlebots." A strange whirring and grinding of gears begins, and as you watch the cruise liner transmogrifies ... no, transmutes ... no, transitions (yeah, that's the ticket!) itself into a large bottle of ... "Steak sauce?"

"I am Alpha Prime. I copied this form to blend in with your world."

You stifle a chuckle. "Yeah, I see. Anyway, if you're willing to cooperate, can I help you put the other guys out of commission?"

"We are the only ones who can stop the Fordicons. Humans are weak. We do not wish to harm humans, in fact innocent humans should be protected. Humans must go down the ... hey, are there any stairs around here? A space elevator maybe?"

"Sorry, no."

"Very well. Please go about your business. We will take care of the Fordicons ourselves."

Here is the last (I think) message that Susan says when you wipe out the robots for the third time.- I'm glad you could put a stop to the rampaging robots, yet again. We've got to find a way to stop them, but we've also got to keep our plans going. It's far too late to pretend that we're not here. We're going to keep the gates closed as much as possible to try to reduce the window when anyone might come through, but we've got to keep working on projects up at the station, and we'll let you through whenever you need to go up there.Pandadude 7:30 AM 2/23/08

first message "Susan is visibly shaken when you enter. She says, "We're still trying to figure out what happened, but it's a disaster up there. Earlier today some kind of machinery entered the space station, like a robot with tank treads. Nobody at the space station thought much of it initially, but the thing is, we didn't send it up from down here. We don't know where it came from. At first the robot seemed to roam around for a bit, like it was scouting the area, especially by the pond. Then some other machinery--this one more like a tall, skinny, and somewhat humanoid robot--came through the portal, and almost instantly attacked the treaded robot."

"Most of the people aboard the station quickly evacuated, while several more robots of each type appeared in the station. The fight swiftly escalated to a serious battle, with the robots tearing each other apart. We've got the the campus police and a volunteer militia of sorts guarding this side of the portal, but so far the robots haven't shown much interest in us or doing anything but fighting each other. We're watching them fight via video uplink. Still, I'm really worried. I don't know anything about these robots: where they came from, what they might do to us, or where it will lead us. But I do know that if we don't put a stop to the fighting they'll tear the space station apart. Can you go up there and try to put a stop to it?"" Matt the vigilante 03:13, 3 March 2008 (MST)

There are also messages when you talk to Susan if you haven't finished with the robots for the day:
How's the fight in the space station going? Have you had any luck putting a stop to the robotic destruction?
Susan asks if you ever patrol out of town. When you mention that you've spent time in the desert, she suggests that you may want to keep an eye out for anything interesting. Particularly if you can get an elevated view, that may be a good way to scout out strange activity in and around the mysterious Area 54. "I don't really buy the conspiracy theories, but your reports of giant insects out there make me think there must have been some nuclear testing at some point."
You stop in and tell Susan about the mysterious mechanical ruin you found in the desert. She listens thoughtfully, first seeming skeptical but then growing more interested as you fill in the details. When you're done, Susan has you go over everything a couple of times, to make sure she understands. Finally you ask, "So, what do you think?"

Susan pauses to collect her thoughts. "As always, I'm skeptical until I have more data, but this sounds intriguing. There are any number of possible explanations, and in the limited light it makes your observations all the more suspect, but I'll definitely send out a team tomorrow to investigate. I don't know if I mentioned, but I'm not only faculty here at the university, I'm also a founding member of an 'abnormal occurrences' research team."

"You mean something like the S.U.I.T. researchers?"

Susan laughs. "No, those guys are a bunch of quacks. We like to collect stories of all sorts of unusual occurrences--paranormal investigation, U.F.O.s, you name it. We're open-minded skeptics, so we don't have an agenda to prove people wrong, just apply good science. Most of it still involves telling crazy pepole they're delusional, but it's an interesting hobby."

Susan suggests you check back in tomorrow evening and she'd let you know what she's found.

"[Player]! Come in. I've got exciting news! That crash site you found out in the desert, it's amazing! Whatever it is, it's not of human origin, you're right about that. It was mechanical, but it's not like any kind of machinery I've ever seen, and what little bit of language could be found is no earthly language. Plus it's got to be hundreds or thousands of years old--again, too old for humans."

"Did you find anything significant?" you ask.

"Other than the discovery of non-human life out in the universe? It's too early to say for sure. There's one thing that's particularly interesting, and I'll get to that in a moment. Most of what's in there was badly damaged--it looks like whatever it was crash landed and barely survived complete destruction, and time has not been kind to it since. There's no sign of life, either, which is strange. Either it was an unmanned ship, or the beings inside it escaped before the crash."

Susan continues, "There's all kinds of things we can learn from this technology, given the time to piece it together again. But there's one thing we got out of there, though, that's particularly intriguing. We found a large crate that was damaged on the surface, but the inner contents were exceptionally well padded. Layer after layer of strange materials: foams and harnesses and whatnot. Inside were two large devices, shaped like hollow triangles. We have no idea what they're for, but at least on the surface they appear to be in perfect physical condition. They're our best hope for learning something about this technology. We've brought them back to the lab for investigation. Check back in tomorrow and I'll tell you what we've found."

If you come back and speak to Susan after waiting for another rollover to occur:

"We've got amazing news!" Susan says before you can even say hi. For someone who likes to talk about being calm and rational, she looks like she's about to explode. "Those triangles? They're portals! To each other. You go in one, and you come out the other."

"Wait," you say, "like a tunnel or something?"

"No, like teleporting. Instantaneous matter transmission. You know, 'Beam me up, Scotty.' Or something right out of Stargate. The triangles aren't connected, and it doesn't matter how far apart they are. Here, watch."

Susan turns on a TV in her office and starts playing a DVD. "This is a recording from earlier, when we still had both of them in the lab." The scene is a large garage or warehouse. Two large metal triangles are set up 30 feet apart. The space inside the triangle shimmers oddly. As you watch, a woman approaches one of the triangles, steps inside, and steps outside of the other one. "Wow ..." is all you can think to say.

"Exactly. We've driven one out to the edge of the city, and the results are the same. Instantaneous travel."

"What are you going to do with them?"

We're trying to get funding for an emergency space launch. We've got to get one of these portals up there as soon as possible, and start building a space station. The problem is, we're also trying to keep somewhat quiet about it. If the government finds out about it, they're likely to shut these things up in a basement somewhere for perpetual study. My colleagues and I believe we have to act quickly, so we're trying to track down private funding for the expedition. We think once we can get the portal into space and get a significant station built, the momentum will carry the project forward. We need millions, though, so if you happen to know any potendial donors, please come back and let me know."

Visits thereafter:

Susan is working on a spreadsheet when you stop by her office. "Oh, hi, [Player], I'm just wrapping up the project budget. We collected around twenty-four million chips in private funding, which should be enough for the initial construction. I'm just tabulating the final donation amounts so we can dedicate the station to the private contributors who made it happen.

There's not much up there yet, but I've made arrangements for you to go up there any time you like. The portal is here at the university. Construction will go on for a while, but I think the results of some serious anti-gravity research ought to allow us to quickly make use of a number of manufacturing techniques that aren't possible here on Earth. You may find it worth your while to investigate.

Day 1 of the Robot Invasion:
Susan is visibly shaken when you enter.

Can you go up there and try to put a stop to it?"

After defeating the first day's robots, Susan will say:
"I'm glad you could put a stop to the rampaging robots. I'm worried we might have more serious issues to deal with soon, though."

Day 2 of the Robot Invasion:

I'm glad you could put a stop to the rampaging robots, again. I'm beginning to think I may have made a terrible mistake. I think activating the portal may have alerted the robots to our presence, and drawn them here. At this point all we can do is prepare ourselves for the worst.

Day 3 of the Robot Invasion:

I'm glad you could put a stop to the rampaging robots, yet again. We've got to find a way to stop them, but we've also got to keep our plans going. It's far too late to pretend that we're not here. We're going to keep the gates closed as much as possible to try to reduce the window when anyone might come through, but we've got to keep working on projects up at the station, and we'll let you through whenever you need to go up there.

On the first day of the robot invasion, after you defeat 15 robots (I only got lanky and treaded types), you get a message:
Silence. You look around, but no more robots seem to be moving anywhere in the space station. Scrap metal and scorch marks are all you see.

The description of the Space Station location then reads:
You're in one of what will be several large community areas in the space station. The rest of the station is made of private quarters and office and research space. There are a few locations available to you. All is still after the robot invasion. It's quiet. Too quiet.
