Back to Quests

Walkthrough
1. When you reach level 7 this quest is started, with the following journal message:

You get the feeling that you should probably check in on Rand. It takes a minute to remember that he's not in Somerset anymore, and you've got to find him downtown.

If you don't use a range 3 or more Transportation you also get the line:

You're probably going to need a better vehicle to make it all the way downtown. Maybe you can pick up something at the all-night used car lot just down from the Golden Wooden Nickel casino.

2. Visiting the Twilight Police Department you get:

Rand greets you as you come in. "I don't have anything specific to tell you this time, but I've been noticing a strange trend downtown. There's been a weird spike in all kinds of criminal activity--particularly murders and break-ins, but other stuff, too. I was wondering if you'd have some time to spare, just keeping an eye on things down there?"

You shrug and then nod. Yeah, why not?

The journal message is updated to:

There's been trouble downtown, and you're just the hero to take that trouble and make lemonade. Metaphorically speaking that is. And metaphorically mixing, too.

4. Adventure in The streets of downtown Twilight until you get Two Paths Diverged in a Darkened Street.

Option 1 (shortcut):

4.a Choosing "Investigate the shouting in the alley" changes the journal to:

There's been trouble downtown, and it's up to you to sort things out. It looks like the Zion's Tears cult is at least part of the problem. You know where their headquarters are; maybe it's time to do a little snooping?

Continue with step 8.

Option 2:

4.b Choosing "Continue following the suspicious figure" changes the journal to:

There's been trouble downtown, and it's up to you to sort things out. You followed that one shady character but lost him, and the distant shouting didn't sound promising either.

5.b Adventuring some more in The streets of downtown Twilight yields Should Have Been a Linebacker and changes to journal to:

There's been trouble downtown, and it's up to you to sort things out. So far none of your leads have panned out--better keep looking.

6.b Adventure some more in The streets of downtown Twilight until you get the Dead Women Don't Wear Plaid adventure. This updates your journal message to:

There's been trouble downtown, and it's up to you to sort things out. The dead woman you found appears to be a member of the Zion's Tears cult. You might want to research them a bit more.

7.b Adventure a bit more in The streets of downtown Twilight until you get the Almost Like You'd Planned It adventure. This updates your journal message to:

There's been trouble downtown, and it's up to you to sort things out. It looks like the Zion's Tears cult is at least part of the problem. You know where their headquarters are; maybe it's time to do a little snooping?

8. Adventure in Zion's Tears building until you get What the Hell?! and the following message to your journal:

Something truly strange is going on at the Zion's Tears cult headquarters. Besides possible murder, some of the followers might not even be human. You'd better get to the bottom of this mystery. If you could find the leader of these strange beings, maybe you can stop whatever they're up to.

9. Continuing the adventure in the Zion's Tears building will lead to A Familiar Figure. Continue and you will eventually fight the Zion's Tears demiurge. Defeat her to get the following journal message:

You've scattered the Zion's Tears creatures and defeated their leader in combat. All that remains is to call in Rand and have him and Twilight P.D. clean up the rest of the mess.

5. Visiting the Twilight Police Department begets:

It's difficult to get through all the details without sounding like a crazy person, but you explain to Rand that some kind of nonhuman force was behind the Zion's Tears movement. Rand has a few moments of incredulity, but once you get him down to the building with a couple of S.W.A.T. teams and start to work your way through the building, they're ready enough to believe you.

Spookiest of all is a half-built mechanical contraption you find on the top floor. At first nobody seems to have any idea what it's for, but Rand gets back to you later and says that the best guesses of the scientists examining it suggest it's some sort of interdimensional transportation device. Clearly the Zion's Tears creatures had to come from somewhere, and it looks like they were trying to bring more in soon.

You shudder at the thought, but Rand assures you that the dimensional gate has been removed from the building and is being kept somewhere safe while the scientists try to study it and learn how the superior technology is supposed to work.

The following message appears in the Completed Quests section of your journal:

You've scattered the Zion's Tears creatures and defeated their leader in combat. The police have helped clean up the remainder of the offices, and their nearly complete dimensional gate is now in safe hands. There wasn't any other evidence connecting Michael Ace to the cult, but the possibility that the trillionaire might have been involved still worries you.

Rewards
* forcegloves.
* A class-specific talisman.

Notes
Step 9 can be sped up by using the horn of Zion, a drop from matarkhis which initiates combat with an archon. Defeating 3-4 archons lets you fight the Zion's Tears demiurge.

References
*The quest name is a reference to the song Don't Cry for Me Argentina from the musical Evita.
*One part of the mixed metaphors in the initial journal message is "When life throws you lemons, make lemonade"

What about the adventure?

Dead Women Don't Wear Plaid
You find yourself in the neighborhood where you first saw the jewel thief. On a whim you drift to the other side of the street and poke your head into the alley where you heard the shouting, and immediately you get a feeling that something isn't right. With a weighty sense of foreboding, you creep further down the alley. A horrific sight awaits you: the body of a young woman lies partially buried in a heap of trash bags. You grit your teeth and come close enough to verify that she's not still alive, and then go call the police.

The investigator assigned to the case, a woman named Christine Lind, takes your statement, and then, because she's friends with Rand and knows he trusts you, shares with you what she's been able to figure out. She says, "The cause of death was a blow to the head--the murder weapon was a rock or a brick or something like that. Blunt and heavy. The weird thing is the woman's clothes, or lack of them. She's only wearing a bra and underwear, with no sign of any other garments. But other than the blow to the head and a bruise on her wrist, she doesn't have any other injuries. She doesn't have any identification or a purse, but if it was a simple burglary it wouldn't make sense to take her clothes. Especially after the way she was killed, the shirt couldn't have been worth anything. That makes me think there must have been something incriminating about her outfit.

"Another possible clue is a tattoo on her hip. It's a teardrop, and looks a lot like the logo the Zion's Tears cultists use. I found some thread samples on her body, too. They're being sent to the lab for analysis, but they're coarse and brown, a lot like the normal Zion's Tears robes, so it wouldn't surprise me at all if that's a match."

You mull over those details for a minute. "So someone killed a Zion's Tears follower, and then wanted to cover up that she was part of the group? Why would someone do that?"

Lind shrugs. "I dunno. To avoid having attention drawn to the cult? But that would only make sense if someone connected to the cult killed her in the first place."

You nod. "Yeah, I guess that makes sense. Maybe I'd better learn a bit more about these people."

Patrol again at the streets of downtown Twilight

Or go back to downtown Twilight

Or go back to the main page.

Alternate path to Zion's Tears building
I had a different path to Zion's Tears building. I encountered Two Paths Diverged in a Darkened Street; before I encountered Dead Women Don't Wear Plaid, and instead of taking "Investigate the shouting in the alley" I took the other path. After I got onto the quest, I encountered the following quest, which set me back onto the walkthrough:

Almost Like You'd Planned It

You walk the streets until you find a man who looks like one of the Zion's Tears cult members. When he calls you an infidel and charges you, instead of engaging in combat you tackle the guy and try to get him to talk. The man turns out to be surprisingly reluctant to tell you anything, even under considerable persuasive pressure. At some point you realize you have to either escalate your persuasion until it's practically torture, or you need to let him go. And, as much as you'd like to rough the guy up more, the fight's gone out of him and it just wouldn't be heroic to torture a--possibly--innocent man.

Left with no choice, you let the man go. He gets up, dusts himself off, and gives you a hateful glare before stalking off.

You wait until he's a block away and then slip into the shadows and begin to tail him. His path takes a couple of twists and turns, but quickly leads him to a tall building paneled in dark glass. You press yourself into a nook between buildings to hide as he looks around furtively and then punches a code in a small side door and enters. Once he's gone, you pad over to the small door, but don't see anything interesting. So you check out the main entrance to the building half a block down. It's locked, of course, but there's a small logo with a tear-shaped outline that reads "Z.T. Enterprises." Zion's Tears? Bingo. This must be their headquarters.
|name=The Te of Crate Smashing
|image=crate-smashing.jpg
|desc=You enter a large warehouse, lured by the sounds of splintering wood, keeping an eye out for trouble. You're surprised to find apparently legitimate activity--men disassembling already empty crates.

The foreman waves you over, saying "We're a recycling outfit. Bought the entire contents of this warehouse from a company that went belly-up. Problem is, disassembly is such a slow and painful process. Don't suppose you'd like to give it a go for a bit, eh?"

You level a cold stare at the man. "Why would I want to smash crates? Don't you think I've got better things to do?"

"Better things than to set a world record? We had a champion crate smasher in here a few weeks ago, smashed ninety-four crates in five minutes. Bet you can't can't touch ninety."

After a few more rounds of taunting you show that smart-aleck foreman and go to town on as many crates as you can find. With a smash-smash here and a smash-smash there, you really smash some crates. Sadly, none of them spit out any gold coins or stray magic items.

When the dust settles and the splinters fall out, the remains of one hundred and fifty-odd crates lie before you, broken and fit only for firewood.

The foreman and the entire rest of the wrecking crew applaud you heartily and say they've never seen better. It's so entertaining and cathartic that you don't really even get that upset half an hour later when you realize you were completely Tom Sawyered.

You gain 160-213 XP.

Hey guys, the 3 items here (Shadow Mist's Iron Scythe, Captain Nocturnal's Serpent Skin Pants, Pawn of Destruction) are what appeared for me after my first retcon run with a 12-mettle Naturalist (no food or sidekick restrictions, 5 pulls/day, no skills). I guess we can't say for sure what unlocked what, although it seems likely that the scythe and pants are class-related. It should also be noted that mettle are free pulls, so you can save them up and don't have to worry about leadins. --Prestige 01:55, 30 September 2010 (PDT)

Hello! 6 items in my store - the 2 class pieces, 2 caffiene item, the pawn and a class avatar. I was at 16 points. No sidekick here, so im guessing Maso brings the big rewards. Strlikecrazy 1/10/2010

Gadget 10 mettle run produced the pawn + 7 mettle hat (I'll be wearing it tomorrow) Mecha Nist's Night-Vision Helmet -- jpsteel 2 Oct 2010

A 3 mettle Elemental run unlocked only the pants and the pawn. Edivad 06:07, 2 October 2010 (PDT)

A Grimdark (17 mettle, max points except for full consumables) gadgeteer run got me 2 pieces of gear, the pawn and the avatar. So apparently sugarless unlocks caffeine, and presumably caffeine-less unlocks sugar. I wonder if naturally hyper unlocks something special. -- TeKRunneR

Just completed gadgeteer with 12 mettle, diet including - have 2 class items, 2 caffeine and pawn. --Shikao 10:57, 5 October 2010 (PDT)

My 15 mettle Elementalist run did not unlock the avatar, so it looks like 16 is the threshold for avatars. -- Hawksmoor
:15-mettle Gadget run (naturally hyper, no skills, no sidekick, 10 pulls/day) sadly did not unlock any consumables nor avatar. --Prestige 03:04, 6 October 2010 (PDT)
:Yeah, it looks that naturally hyper doesn't unlock consumables --Shikao 10:46, 6 October 2010 (PDT)

1-mettle Gadgeteer run did not unlock any class equipment(though it did get me the bishop).
Edivad 08:02, 7 October 2010 (PDT)
:10-mettle psion run (10 pulls/day, all food, no sidekick, no permed skills) did not unlock anything except lower-cost class gear as expected. It was my 3rd run, and no third chess piece nor sidekick was unlocked. --Prestige 03:45, 9 October 2010 (PDT)

Did a 3 mettle run, unlocked the 3rd chess piece. Considering it was just a trainee run, possible reward for 5 completed retcons? Strlike. 15:00, 9 October (BST)
:Yeah, I guess the knight is for 4 runs (or 5 as you say, but we're not counting the first). Odd that there is not necessarily a 3rd run reward. Regarding the sidekick book, I know we were talking about the theory that it's unlocked by having all 4 quadrants, and it's true that I'm missing one, which could be the reason I have not unlocked it. Any other ideas? --Prestige 15:48, 9 October 2010 (PDT)
:Unlocked the Owner's manual after completing my 4th Gadgeteer retcon (3rd not counting initial timeline; 16, 13 and 13 Mettle), so it doesn't have anything to do with having all 4 quadrants. --Tasfal 11:28, 19 October 2010 (CET)

Hopefully I figured out the requirement for lower-cost item. If 1<x<=3, then it must be 3. Why? Because 2 mettle run is impossible (at least for now). --Shikao 08:16, 17 October 2010 (PDT)

Aftercore note
:Hi Muhandes, I noticed you erased the "Only available in aftercore" note from the Pawn of Destruction. But for me, that parenthetical note is literally written there next to the item in Nocturne's Shop, and its radio button is grayed out. So what's up with that? A difference in our run types? --Prestige 08:15, 1 October 2010 (PDT)

@Prestige - It says the same for me, Only available in aftercore. Strlikecrazy

::Are you in a no-item run? Cause I can surely buy it, in my full item run.--Muhandes 15:09, 2 October 2010 (PDT)
:::I'm in a 10 item/day run. Perhaps the fact that you're in a full item run means that all restrictions like that are lifted. --Prestige 16:41, 2 October 2010 (PDT)

No pull run and both chess items (pawn + bishop) say (Only available in aftercore.) -- jpsteel 8 Oct 2010

Order
It's nice that everyone is adding new items, but it would be good if we agree on some kind of way of ordering items. My propositions:
1) alphabetically - the most obvious one, though not too good imo
2) by mettle cost - also quite obvious, but again there are better solutions
3) grouping similar, then by mettle cost within each group - consumables as first group, then classless items, finally class restricted - that's my choice.
--Shikao 12:08, 3 October 2010 (PDT)

Shouldn't we order it by the way it shows in the actual shop in-game? Granted no-one can see all items at once in there yet but once they can it just seems like it would be nice to keep the order tha same as in-game. --Zillow--

: What Zillow said. For now just add in whatever order you see in-game, and if not sure, where-ever you feel like. Once you see from in-game that the order is incorrect, fix it. --Muhandes 00:32, 4 October 2010 (PDT)
:Currently, my shop is: Sharovary, Cloak, Silk Shirt, Blindfold, Turkish Coffee, Stimpack, Chess pieces, picture of elemental, picture of psion. I won't have the sugar until after this run, but it looks like they're grouped as Equipment, Consumables, Chess, Avatars. Within each group, they're further grouped by cost first, and probably in order of Elem, Nat, Gadget, Psion. Do we want to duplicate the shop or keep things grouped by class as we have here right now? Cristiona
:: wiki duplicates reality, does not create it. Resistance is futile. --Muhandes 01:45, 13 October 2010 (PDT)
