garage
n. The place where one parks one's car, when it's not in the shop or parked in front of some bar.
In the states "garage" is a simple and unassuming word for a simple concept. In England, I've been told, the mere pronunciation of the word (ranging from something that rhymes with carriage to something that rhymes with gah-razjh) can be a linchpin indicator of class issues centuries old. But that's the British Isles for you.
Me, I just tend to call it "car hole" and avoid the matter entirely. Or sometimes "the big closet" if I'm trying to figure out where to store some of my wife's old junk. Or "the second bedroom" once I've told my wife how I'm going to throw "her old junk" in the "car hole."
