Plural: uncut rubys
Rubies are almost as hard as diamonds and frequently have a deep red color, sometimes described (rather unpleasantly) as "pigeon blood". The treating process for turning what you're holding into a real gem is pretty lengthy and frequently involves heating the stone several times. You don't have time for that, so you'll have to find a different use.
