The "Robot with a Heart of Gold" references two things in Douglas Adam's "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" series. The first being Marvin the Paranoid Android, who suffered from depression and frequently lamented being given menial tasks, despite having superior intelligence. The second being the Heart of Gold, which was used to power a device called the Improbability Drive.

robot with a heart of gold
Plural: Unknown
This just might be one of the smartest robots you've ever met. Unfortunately, its intelligence is more than matched by its depressing attitude. This makes its name even more confusing--"heart of gold" suggests that somewhere down deep the robot is filled with kindness and good intentions, but from the surface there's no such indication at all.

When Used

It doesn't take more than the first mournful groan of gears and a wistful sigh of pneumatics to convince you that this robot is going to be a complete party pooper. By the time it gets around to moaning about an ache in one of its diodes--five whole minutes later--you're about ready to shut it off again. (Duration: 120 minutes.)
