Plural: trilobytes
This is a chitinous shield made from of a collection of smaller tiles, each of which looks a bit like the fossilized remains of an ancient sea critter. It's a pretty unlikely assembly, but not really any more unlikely than, say, a purse made out of an ancient marine reptile or a sofa made out of the cured hide of a quasi-tame, obese herbivore.
