You notice two dark spots slowly moving across a chalky white hillside. When you draw close enough to ascertain the spots are actually humans, you pause for a moment to marvel that predators haven't already located and devoured these two. But on your approach you quickly realize this party hasn't fared well. The lead man, Bishop, has a nasty puncture wound in his abdomen, and the other, Hudson, is clearly shell-shocked. He keeps whining, "Time out, man, time out," to nobody in particular.
As you do your best to patch them up and escort them home, they relay the sad news that Parker and Dallas had been with them but were carried off by some sort of flying horror, Apone had been devoured by a kind of giant acidic slug, and Dietrich had the great misfortune to be trampled by a pack of stampeding behemoths.
Trying to keep their mind off things, you ask them about their research in the caves. They tell you to stay well away from cave X, which was full of batlike creatures and devoid of any valuable minerals.
You mark cave X off of your map.
