lost soul
Plural: lost souls
You never realized before that these things could be lost literally as well as metaphorically. How could that happen, anyway? Do they just fall out sometimes if you're not paying attention, or is it some kind of astral projection gone wrong? Or was this one sold for some sort of financial gain and then simply misplaced by the new owner? For that matter, maybe this is a new soul that was on its way to its first body, and it missed because of a bad sense of direction?
