When you need a truly dark and gritty backstory, you can always start with a family photo from before the horrible trauma that started you down the path of vengeance. In this case, it's not even your family. It belongs to another hero called "The Judge," but the transitive property of trauma can make your life darker and grittier as well. You'll probably even pick up a vicious nemesis out for blood rather than your normal rogue's gallery.
