Sunset Strip Mine was a one-time two week event that occurred on Mar. 13th-30th 2009.
1. Following update messages about light tremors On Mar. 11th 2009 and a message about an earthquake on Mar. 12th 2009, this message appeared on the main page on Mar. 13th 2009:

2. You had to have access to Susan Novak to take part in this phase. Talking to Susan you got:
Of the earthquake Susan says, "One of my associates in the geology department reports all of the small tremors and the epicenter of the quake were located northeast of town, in the mountains. Most of town seems unharmed, but a mine up there has collapsed, and I hear some workers are trapped inside. They could probably use your help if you have the time."
At this point Clean Up the Rubble Field was opened. The description said:
The strip mine spreads before you like a sickly sunset, dark and mottled like a rusted scab at the top, marbling toward the middle with an uneasy orange tinge that brightens to a bottom core the shade of yellow ichor tinged with blood.
The foreman reports that the earthquake caused a landslide that has covered the entrance to a mine shaft. Nearly a dozen miners are trapped inside. They have adequate ventilation and some limited supplies, but everyone in Twilight is pitching in to rescue them. So far workers and heroes have collectively cleared X pounds of rock from in front of the mine entrance.
The main page message was changed to:

In addition to that, a section "Sunset Strip Mine" was added to the journal "Other Notes" page, with the single line:
You cleared X pounds of rock from the collapsed mine
Reaching 6000 pounds earned you the Quite the Bulldozer merit badge.
3. This remained the same until the first adventure in this area on Mar. 16th 2009. On Mar. 16th Clean Up the Rubble Field became available to everyone (even without talking to Susan). Adventuring in Clean Up the Rubble Field on Mar. 16th-30th 2009 gave the Break on Through to the Other Side adventure and opened Nor' Star Mine Shaft while locking Clean Up the Rubble Field. The area description became:
The strip mine spreads before you like a sickly sunset, dark and mottled like a rusted scab at the top, marbling toward the middle with an uneasy orange tinge that brightens to a bottom core the shade of yellow ichor tinged with blood.
The mine is open, and the trapped workers have been rescued. Unfortunately, strange, vicious creatures have somehow filled the mine, and are threatening to swarm out and overtake the whole area.

4. This remained the same until the first adventure in this area on Mar. 18th 2009. Adventuring in Nor' Star Mine Shaft on Mar. 18th-30th 2009 gave the Further Down the Rabbit Hole adventure and opened Brynne Fair mine while locking Nor' Star Mine Shaft. The area description became:
The strip mine spreads before you like a sickly sunset, dark and mottled like a rusted scab at the top, marbling toward the middle with an uneasy orange tinge that brightens to a bottom core the shade of yellow ichor tinged with blood.
Heroes collectively cleared 6,495,412 pounds of rock to rescue the trapped miners, and now they have teamed up to defeat X creatures in an attempt to clear the mine.
The mine is open, and the trapped workers have been rescued. Unfortunately, strange, vicious creatures have somehow filled the mine, and are threatening to swarm out and overtake the whole area.

5. This remained the same until the first adventure in this area on Mar. 22nd 2009. Adventuring in Brynne Fair mine on Mar. 22nd-30th 2009 gave the Yes, Even Further Down the Rabbit Hole adventure and opened Moira mine shaft while locking Brynne Fair mine. The area description became:
The strip mine spreads before you like a sickly sunset, dark and mottled like a rusted scab at the top, marbling toward the middle with an uneasy orange tinge that brightens to a bottom core the shade of yellow ichor tinged with blood.
Heroes collectively cleared 6,495,412 pounds of rock to rescue the trapped miners, and now they have teamed up to defeat X creatures in an attempt to clear the mine.
Strange, vicious creatures have are swarming all over the area, apparently rising up from deeper in the earth and taking over the entire mine. They need to be stopped somehow.
6. This remained the same until the first adventure in this area on Mar. 27th 2009. Adventuring in Moira mine shaft on Mar. 27th-30th 2009 let you fight Brother Spleen. Defeating him ended the event. The area description became:
The strip mine spreads before you like a sickly sunset, dark and mottled like a rusted scab at the top, marbling toward the middle with an uneasy orange tinge that brightens to a bottom core the shade of yellow ichor tinged with blood.
Heroes collectively cleared 6,495,412 pounds of rock to rescue the trapped miners, and now they have teamed up to defeat 193,630 creatures in an attempt to clear the mine.
The mine is closed, and the shafts bulldozed shut. Nobody's ever going to go down there again, that's for sure.

7. Brother Spleen could be fought until Mar. 30th 2009. On Mar. 31st 2009 the area disappeared and the event was over.
