Credits go to Sanjuro, who posted on the forums, and Korpis, whom Sanjuro credited with discovering it.
I got it by fighting Sophocles with 3 sources of Soul Gazing equipped. (Pallid Mask, sophocle's monocle, sophocle's bifocles). It may get triggered with just one or more of Sophocle's accessories.
When fighting Sophocles, it triggers the message:
"You gaze deep into your opponent's soul:
You sense that he's staring right back into yours, but overwhelm his gaze with your superior focles"
