Like all gyms, Resolution Gym gets 99% of its new members after January 1st. Unlike other gyms, they're completely up front about it. Hey, at least they aren't as brutally honest as the short lived You'll Only Come Here Once Gym.
Honesty aside, thanks to your talisman and, well, super powers (not to mention spending all night fighting criminals) you don't really need this. Your sidekick, on the other hand, could possibly use it. Seems they've been winded trying to keep up with you lately. I mean, I didn't want to say anything, but we're all friends here...

You give the gym membership to your sidekick, but in a helpful way, totally not a passive-aggressive way. They're substantially more excited about it than you would ever have been, so score one for your super present selection.
That's not one of your powers, you're just awesome.
Your sidekick learns a role: Gym Buddy.
Subsequent times:
Your sidekick already has a gym membership and you definitely don't need one. I mean, have you seen your pecs? Daaaaaamn.
During the Cat and Mick-y Mouse Game quest:
Your kidnapped sidekick isn't available for training right now. The whole being kidnapped thing, you know.
Notes
- When bought: Although you're just getting a gym membership, buying it from an ancient man in a mysterious shop for 10 silver stars seems strangely portentous.
