This is two half stacks which together make one large. Why not just call it one large? Don't be dense!

Actually, you would, but the rubber bands dividing the stack make it clear that each half is an independent unit. Whether you see these units as being half full or half empty has deep philosophical meaning, but that's between you and your shrink.
