Forged under the light of a red sun and brought to earth by an alien trophyhunter, this was passed on to you as a gift after you defeated him in battle. Well, you picked it up off of his unconscious body, so you can safely assume it was a gift. The villains of this city are truly, one and all, honorable dudes.
Or you might have bought this off someone, in which case they totally broke the social contract by reselling a present. They're totally getting coal (or some other fuel source) for Christmas this year.
