Using the nova skill (only works with melee weapon, I used archeologist's trowel; the 10 fire damage from firestarter; the HP returned is from the talismans "5% of damage returned as HP")

You call out to Water Boy's allies, raising an unspeakable horror from the unspeakable depths. You carefully note its exact description in your journal, then ride it into battle.

You attack ...

you slide in close to your opponent and slash quickly with your blade, hitting for 394 + 10 + 79 damage.

You gain some of your opponent's life force. You gain 25 hit points.

Wow. It'll be a bit before you can do that again. You gain an effect: Nova Recovery (Added for 120 minutes.)

You ask your unspeakable friend to carry you into battle once again. Thankfully all Water Boy products come with an English to Squamous Horror From Beyond The Stars phrase book.you may not have the greatest range, but the day goes to the swift! You slice your opponent for 389 + 10 + 156 damage.

You gain some of your opponent's life force. You gain 28 hit points.

Next attack had the same "again" message, but did even higher psychic damage (233) - I assume that this number would go even higher if I had more attacks.
my normal attacks in there were ~ 387 + 10, so no improvement in the normal damage.
For my next trick, I used diamond dagger of derring do and bear mauls (10 points) combined with recognizers in s7g. Opponent: Soundwave. Psychic damages: 102 (during casting of the nova skill itself, normal damage was ~200 or ~500, don't remember >_>), then (I realized that the psychic damage went up a bit more than last time, so I recorded the maul damage too) 2573 + 4 + 1030, 2525 + 4 + 1515, 2507 + 4 + 2006, 2543 + 4 + 2543.
Hypothesis: N-th hit in the combat (counting the nova skill as first hit) does W*N*20% in psychical damage, where W weapon damage of that hit (so, say, the 5th hit does as much psychical damage as you did normal damage; see above: 2543 normal, 2543 psychic added). --xKiv

From fighting orwhal as a level 31 natty using a Diamond Dagger and no additional sources of elemental damage, using 10 point Maul:

110 + 25 damage. (actual nova use)
262 + 262 damage.
244 + 300 damage.
242 + 343 damage.
255 + 404 damage.

Psychic add-on damage certainly seems to inflate. If it matters, my strength was 363(311). Cristiona (talk) 20:13, 13 March 2013 (PDT)

Of cource, Orwhal has not-entirely-spaded (nonlinear) resistances, so these numbers shouldn't be directly compared to other combats, but I do suspect that it works like sonic sniper in that the extra damage is calculated before any resistances are applied. --XKiv (talk) 06:44, 14 March 2013 (PDT)
