He still had the wings, but the additional items were the same as I got from a different master of trainers today. - Well, Fabu is listed here as master of veterans, but last time I got him as master of trainers. He still had the wings, but the additional items were the same as I got from a different master of trainers today. - Since you encountered Fabu as the master of trainers then it looks like a boss pool is probably how it is done. The "You take some additional suspicious items from the brute." message makes more sense in this case.
