I forgot to copy down the text, but if you use a combat item, you instead throw it into the Sludgyre and power it up. I used Justin's magic wand (which was consumed), and it leveled up by 20 (<autosell>/10). I also have the following on my records:

hoyifung03 threw 200.

Given that the name of the image is sludgyretadpole.gif, I'm guessing throwing enough value of items into this turns it into a new form.
