Shade was another of those heroes that walked the line between hero and villain. While one of the earliest of the golden era heroes, that era's reputation for base-line "heroness" makes his activities seem even darker by comparison. There's no nice way to say it: Shade was a sniper. His specialty was kingpins and other high-ranking criminals who were beyond the reach of most heroes and all law enforcement. The public had a love-hate relationship with him, and nobody seemed especially upset when he unceremoniously retired after a few years of activity.
Since Shade built every rifle he used custom and explicitly for a single job, he never had a weapon associated with him. He did, however, have a special pair of pants he was known for. Using highly advanced technology, he wove circuits and stabilizers into his cargo pants, allowing him to sit motionlessly for hours on end, as well as to allow him to flee should he be discovered.
