pugil stick
Plural: pugil sticks
This is a length of PVC pipe that has been wrapped in a thick layer of foam. It was originally designed for bayonet training, but darn near everyone uses them now. It's very nicely balanced and reliable, but that foam really takes out a lot of the oomph from your hits.
