deja voodoo doll
Plural: deja voodoo dolls
This doll reminds you of something. You're not sure if it's something that happened long ago, or something you dreamed of, or something that's happening right now, or something that you saw in a movie once that just repeated itself over and over again. Great. Now you're humming some tune and thinking about David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly, and you don't know why.

Comes from the March 2009 Item of the Month

How Obtained

When Used in Combat

If the foe can be replicated (see notes):

You hold up the voodoo doll, which somehow imprints itself upon your current opponent. (Added for current turn duration + 1 minute.)

Adds effect: Deja Voodoo

On the next adventure you fight the same foe again, preceded by the message:

You have a weird moment where you think you remember remembering this moment, or maybe it it's all just a little bit of history repeating.

If the foe cannot be replicated:

You hold up the voodoo doll, but it has no reaction to your opponent. Apparently the mojo of your foe is stronger than the voodoo of you.

Notes

  • You get to fight the same foe on the next adventure, no matter how much in-game time passed (e.g. by resting).
  • However, the effect is cleared by rollover, so the item is wasted if used on one's last turn for the day.
  • More than one can be used on the same foe. However, although this increases the duration of the effect, it does not affect anything else (the foe is not replicated twice).
  • The Deja Voodoo effect only serves as a reminder. Replication does not depend on the effect being active, nor does replication occur when the effect is on without using the item (e.g. by multiple uses or leftover time from previous foes).
  • The following foes cannot be replicated:
  • If the foe cannot be replicated the item is not consumed.

References

  • The item name is a play on Déjà vu, the experience of feeling sure that one has witnessed or experienced a new situation previously, and Voodoo doll.
  • The tune mentioned is Magic Dance which David Bowie sings in the movie Labyrinth after stealing the baby from Jennifer Connelly's character. The connection is the words "the power of voodoo" from that song.
